Richard is the manager of the Origin and Cause Field Offices and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Waterloo. He has been a licensed professional engineer for over 20 years and is a designated consulting engineer.

Richard has been qualified as an expert in all levels of court and specializes in fire and explosion investigation, fire department litigation, wood burning appliances, marine fires, and chemical reactions. He has over 20 years of experience in fire investigation and has performed over 1700 fire and explosion investigations.

Richard is a past president of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), and a past chairman of the Engineering Section of the Canadian Society of Forensic Science (CSFS).

In addition to working for Origin and Cause, Richard is a part-time firefighter and Lieutenant for the Hamilton Fire Department. He has participated in many educational courses and seminars relating to fire investigation, and presented many training seminars to insurance professionals and fire departments.
